I felt like the reunion at the end was a bit anti-climatic after such a dramatic and developed background between the two characters. Still, I think that Malika, as a thirteen year old, remembers her relationship with Elias much differently than Elias, so I'm not really surprised with how she reacted in the end.

Yes and no. Eight years is a long time to be in a one-sided relationship. But, if you are content with your life and nothing is lacking, then carrying someone in your heart would not be a waste of time.

He really needed closure but he spent too long doing that. If he decided to leave her because of her being a minor, then why didn't he go back to search for her when she was eighteen, five years later?

It was a waste if time in a sense, but it was necessary. He couldn't get her out of his heart without having that encounter.

I don't think anything is a waste of time. Certainly not feelings. Those make you a better person - they created a better character in the story. They make them real.

He needed to move on and finally let her go. So, I thought the ending was fitting.
