I think it can be a hard genre to crack now as an author because it has been explored so much in the past and is difficult to put a new spin on it. However, in Raven's Peak it is set in modern times which I found new and interesting

If they are done right, stories in this genre can be amazing. The problem is when an author uses it as an excuse to do something that otherwise wouldn't make any sense. You still need a solid premise and good execution.

I'm not really a fan of gory horror, but I do like certain horror movies. Like "The Shining" by Stephen King, and "The Others" with Nicole Kidman. I love ghost stories, but sometimes I like to read them more than I like seeing them onscreen. Depends on the amount of gore in the movie.

I think that a lot of people are riding on the coattails of the really good authors. Therefore it is hard finding a good book. Similar to the dystopian society books. I think this is a great supernatural thriller tho.

It's not something I usually read, but I have found that I enjoy them when I do. Who knew? I really enjoyed Raven's Peak.

I've always been afraid of the unexplainable, so ghost and demons frighten me. I love and hate the supernatural thriller genre, but it's always been interesting to me.

Mune wrote:I do agree that it has sort of ran it's course in the traditional aspects, especially with the over production of possession, ghost, and demon movies and stories. Many have a simplistic religious backing and the general demonic or evil entity.

That being said, there is the random gem that can poke through. I would have to say the closest I have seen in the past few years is the movies Sinister and Dream House. As for books, I tend to read the older ones, as many newer ones are rather repetitive. With writers like King and Poe setting my mental basis, it is difficult for many books to live up to those standards.

I think it is time for a fresh twist on these types of stories. Turn tropes on their head and approach them differently. Classic can still be good, but it truly is a flooded market.

I agree that the genre of supernatural thrillers has been flooded with repetitive movies, television series, and books. I think that the Halloween holiday is part of the reason, and it seems that many of the books and movies of that genre are advertised during the month of October.

I think that books that want to write about the supernatural will have far more success if they attempt to flesh out their supernatural systems and the storyline and use the supernatural setting to tell a compelling story.

My problem with books in the supernatural thriller genre is that they seem to be modeled too much on thriller movies and the story by itself is no longer as compelling. While movies largely get away with it with showy special effects, the void is much more apparent in books. However, with a compelling story the genre has some of my favorite books!

I don't think the genre has become overly repetitive because creativity always creates new ideas.

I love supernatural thrillers. Well, I am biased because I love all kinds of thrillers, but the supernatural, paranormal elements in them - without turning the story into horror (I hate horror novels), make it that much more appealing to read.

I do like supernatural thrillers if they are done well. I agree that the market has been flooded with this type of story and some of the plots can be tiresome and repetitive. However, I think there are still thrilling stories out there to find.

I love the supernatural/thriller genre. It's by far my favorite genre. Since it's mostly fantasy, anything can and does happen. Yes, it's been flooded lately, but if the story is good, then I will enjoy it, even if it's similar to other stories I have read.
