The Dead

Was I the only one who got serious vibes of Joyce's The Dead from the first chapter? His feelings for his girlfriend and trying to impress her, only to get left behind at the theater. The looming shadow of illness. The snow falling softly the whole time on the living and the dead. Everything was so evocative of the short story to me. Anyone else have the same feeling? Anyone disagree?

I don't disagree. I got that vibe just a little bit, too.

jhollan2, it's been a very long time since I read The Dead, so I didn't think of it when I read Station Eleven. But you made a good point, and I think you're right. I think realizations like this really add to the enjoyment of a book.

I wouldn't have even thought of that! What a keen observation. I wonder if Emily St. John Mandel is a Joyce fan?

I haven't read that short story - looks like I need to check it out! I'll report back.
