Review by Angi Bennett -- Brandy, Ballad of a Pirate Pri...
A romantic tale of pirates and intrigue, combined with historical and political events, as moral and ethical decisions must be made by each character. Brandy, Ballad of a Pirate Princess by Dan E. Hendrickson is a story that keeps the reader eagerly turning each page to see what will happen next to Brandy, the strong-willed daughter of two very dangerous Pirates. The turbulence that she experiences in her young life as well as the danger and heartbreaking experiences of loved ones will determine her future and define the woman whom she ultimately will choose to be.
The plot was fast-paced and it flowed well as the characters defined themselves. The story line was fresh and detailed with enough variety to reach readers of various interests. The author was willing to push boundaries in order to bring some of his characters to life and therefore created lasting focal points within the story. The characters he created were easy to either love or hate, and with good reason! The overall tone of the tale was positive with subtle nudges to the reader to make moral improvements upon oneself. This book was an enjoyable read and could be re-read with just as much enjoyment later on.
Although the author took time to build out each character and situation, there were opportunities missed in which the story line could have been filled out a little further. These missed opportunities were more in the line of enhancing descriptive actions, creating more obvious divisions in time periods, and perhaps the change from the ending to the epilogue could have been less abrupt.
I would happily give this book a strong 3 out of 4. It was a pleasant tale, well edited and written, with an interesting and unique story line. It created memorable characters and adventures for the reader to reminisce upon long after the book has been completed.
The romantic nature of this book is great for mature teens who are just beginning to think about love and easily continues through to women of a certain age who enjoy a feel-good romance with action and adventure. It was enjoyable to read a book of this nature that was not filled with sexual encounters, but instead spent it's time creating a story upon which the reader could envision Brandy standing aboard ship with her long hair blowing about and her strength of character there for all to see.
