Review by shravsi -- Rescuing General Patton
‘Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of the men who follow and of the man who leads that gains the victory.’- General George S. Patton. This quote sums up the book Rescuing General Patton by Curtis Stephen Burdick.
General George S. Patton, Jr., was one of the greatest battlefield commanders in American history; he was the commanding general of the US 7th Army Group during the second world war. His daring leadership bought the Allies much-needed victory during the invasion of Sicily. After this victory, General Dwight Eisenhower ordered General Patton to apologize to the entire Seventh Army Group and reassigned General Patton to England. This happened when the Allies were preparing to attack Italy! Why lose a great general when every bit of help was important? What led to such drastic events in August of 1943?
Some of the history buffs out there might know the answer already. But is that the real reason? What if a secret mission had occurred behind the eyes of the American public, including President Roosevelt! A mission so sensitive, its success or failure had the power of affecting the outcome of the second world war; a mission considered suicidal by everyone involved in it. A military historian and General Patton’s granddaughter have unearthed the details of this war secret after all these years.
This is war-themed fiction and is not a factual history book. I am stating this to avoid any confusion because this story is so realistic that it’s hard to believe this didn’t happen in reality. I could see the real war zone while I was reading; I was standing beside the soldiers in action. The well-researched details of uniform, army gear, weapons, vehicles, military protocols, accents, décor, geographic detail, etc., made this story sound realistic and easy to picture in my mind. A rescue mission inside the enemy land, the adversities, the patriotism, and the brotherhood among soldiers made this book hard to put down.
The wide variety of characters were memorable; I distinguished each character from others and empathized with them; Mr. Burdick’s writing was full of rich characters. The dialogues and the actions of the characters were realistic. Dietrich Gutner and Fredrick Koenig represented the far end of military ethics. Major Peter Pizzio was what I look for in a leader. Ernest Gorski was my favorite, and he will become your favorite too after you read this book.
A vivid description of the physical attributes of every character helps to visualize the story. In this book, these frequent details disturbed the flow of the story sometimes. This book is fast-paced action, and the heavy descriptions overshadowed the actual story at times. I only found two minor errors; these didn’t affect my reading in any way. Other than these minor observations, there was nothing to dislike about this book. The book appeared well-edited for me. Overall, the story captured my mind while the characters captured my heart. For these reasons, I will rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
This is a well-written wartime story. There are colorful profanities sprinkled throughout the book, so you be the judge if this book is suitable for you. I will recommend this book to historical fiction lovers and readers of war-themed stories, especially regarding the second world war.
