Review by Sandra K Pearson -- The Writer's Roadmap
The Writer’s Roadmap by Leigh Shulman is a guide to using the OGSM method. It’s meant to help you realize your writing goals successfully. The book is divided into four parts, each one explaining a different part of OGSM. O is for Objective, G is for Goals, S is for Strategy and M for Measure. The author gives plenty of examples and exercises to help you along the way. She often uses the example of going on a road trip to explain the process. This method helps to clearly organize your goals and map out the way to reach them.
There was nothing I didn’t like about this book. Everything I read was helpful. Shulman gave exercises to help with organizing thoughts and examples of how it should look. The road trip examples were very helpful because of the way they are planned. It was very easy to go along with, a lot of people do this at some point in their lives. She acknowledged that writing some of the exercises might feel uncomfortable. This was extremely helpful for me because I have never tried to organize my thoughts like this before. “If you don’t know what you want, you can’t outline a clear plan to get from where you are now to where you want to go.” This really stuck with me because I have a habit of trying to make plans without knowing what I want.
The Writer’s Roadmap was very well organized and easy to understand, which I appreciated because I don’t always read this kind of book. I felt the method taught could be used for any aspect of someone’s life, not just for writing. It teaches how to organize what you need to do to achieve your goals perfectly.
I want to improve my ability to write, which is what attracted me to this book in the first place. It provided me with a great place to start. Not only that, the way the author explains everything made me feel like I could be capable of writing a novel myself.
I rate The Writer’s Roadmap by Leigh Shulman 4 out of 4 stars. It was well written and easy to follow. It gave me tools to get organized. It also made me feel like I was capable of improving my writing. A lot of what Shulman said was very inspiring. I did not notice any spelling or grammar mistakes. There were four instances of very minor profanity. I would recommend this to anyone, especially to those who want to improve their writing life.
