I would like to read books that are about history, but with some fictional characters. I also like stories about the unknown, paranormal, but not gory.

What era and area of historical fiction are you interested in? There’s everything from Anna Diamant’s The Red Tent, about the women of the Old Testament, to Southern Rain, a novel about 17th century China that’s now out for Kindle.

It’s a big category.

I recently read a historical fiction novel named 'Yesterday' by Samyann which was about the American Civil War. The characters were fictional but it was obvious that the author had done their historical research for the novel, which made it an interesting read if you're interested in that sort of era!

Why not cross the paranormal with historical fiction? Try Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter or Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

I would recommend the Mercy Thompson series. It has a little bit of everything that you are looking for. It has a little amount of history because the main character, Mercy has a history degree. It is mainly of the fantasy genre; it has ghosts, Native American folklore, Vampires, werewolves, fairies (fae folklore), witches and shapeshifters. It also has some romance and action. Mercedes Thompson is a kickass female lead who is able to contend with the strong supernatural community even though she should be physically weaker. I highly recommend you give this series a chance and if you enjoy it then continue with Alpha and Omega series because it is a subseries off of the Mercy Thompson series.

You might also enjoy the Shadowfalls series by C.C. Hunter which has ghosts, vampires, witches, werewolves, shapeshifters, fairies, etc. Also C.C. Hunter has a new series out that deals with ghosts called the Mortican’s Daughter.

The House of Night series is a bit long but it deals with a unique kind of vampire. It follows Zoey Redbird who is marked with a crescent moon on her forehead to show she must transfer/board at a house of night school. The mark is a show that they are now fledglings on the goddess Nyx’s path to become a vampire. It has many supernatural elements and is quite a different story.

Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate is a good historical fiction book. It shows a family that was torn apart by the corrupt adoption scheme of Georgia Tann under the guise of the Tennessee Children's Home Society. It flip flops 1939 with the Foss family's separation story and the modern day story of a descendent of one of the the Foss children who unearths this hidden family secret.

Historical fiction:

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

To Kill A Mockingbird and Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee

The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult

Also, if you're into postmodern novels I strongly recommend you read E. L. Doctorow's novels as well, such as, Ragtime and The Book of Daniel

The Warramunga's War is good. If you want to read a classic, War and Peace by Tolstoy is the best option. :techie-studyingbrown:

For historical fiction I would suggest Dodger by Terry Pratchett,

For Paranormal I would suggest 'Servants of the Storm' by Delilah S Dawson and 'The Forbidden Game' trilogy by L.J. Smith.

And the sequels to those are good as well, "The Warramunga's Aftermath of War"
Also "The Legacy of Job's Wife"

If you love American historical fiction try the books by Sara Donati. They are incredible. The first is Into the Wilderness. Very long but SO good!! I’m obsessed.

I would highly suggest The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. It takes place during WW2 and has a really good plot. It's the only book that has ever made me cry, so it might get you a little emotional.
