I like true storys

What kind of true stories? Comedy? True crime? Biography? Something else?

Personally, Ann Rule is one of my favorite authors, having wrote several true crime dramas. At one time she worked along Ted Bundy, only to later write about the serial monster.

I enjoy reading books that are fact based. I can compare it to the movie.

Some of my favorite true stories are based on psychology, foster care, etc. I love the books by Torey Hayden. She was an educator and special education therapist. It was a lot of years ago, so some of her techniques are outdated, but I still find it interesting. There are also the Casey Watson books. She was a specialist foster carer and has written a number of novels about the children she and her husband fostered.

I also liked "Gang Leader for a Day" by Sudhir Venkatesh. There are some serious ethical concerns about the fact that he wrote this book, but setting those aside, it gives a pretty interesting insight into gang life from the point of view of an outsider stepping into things. It's pretty easy to relate to for that reason and definitely helped me put concepts of gangs into perspective in a way I hadn't been able to before reading it.

As some of the others have asked, though, your preferences for true books might vary from ours. What are some examples of your favorite true books?

I recommend ‘A Night To Remember’. It’s about the sinking of the Titanic and is very good. It was made into a film, black and white, but still excellent. Probably available on YouTube.

Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chenrow is amazing. I do not usually like biographies, but this one is so well done. It is the only biography that I have not been able to put down.

I recommend "No Longer At Ease" by Chinua Achebe.

The Incredible Life of Henrietta Lacks is an intriguing recap of the life of a woman whose cells are used in all cancer research today. Incredibly interesting.

"True crime" and "Mysteries"

Historical accounts are heartbreaking but they are very helpful in making us empathize with what others have gone through and be sensitive. I love stories of people who experienced wars, the holocaust, etc because they give faces to somewhat abstract picture in my mind.
