Two movies I haven't yet seen listed are The Shinning and Fight Club. The Shinning might not have been "accurately" adapted, but I think the ambiguity created by Stanley Kubrick on whether its a ghost story or a psychotic break makes the movie more interesting. In the book it is clearly a ghost story which isn't bad, but allowing the audience to try to figure out if Jack is going insane or if insane things are happening was a great creative decision.
In recent prints of Fight Club the author, Chuck Palahniuk, wrote in author's notes that the movie is better than his book. I still very much enjoyed the reading, but the movie faithfully adapted the source material and kept the tension throughout the story. This was almost a perfect storm of author and director. Chuck's later books leaned more towards shock and disgust, whereas Fight Club was still early enough in Chuck's writing career that he still wrote controversial stories but was not yet relying on crude humor to make his points. The Director was also a mixed bag, he had directed Alien 3 which was a bust, but within a few years he had put out Se7en and The Game, both psychological thrillers. When Fight Club was ready for film adaptation, it was as if both author and director were put together at the right place and right time.
