I think Maui as a character doesn't seem like a joke. He only told jokes and made witty remarks.

I get what you're saying. It's common when this happens and is due in part to ignorance. They're not really all that familiar with the culture and sometimes I feel like they do a little research and kinda just wing it. That being said, I found the movie really entertaining and still listen to the soundtrack now and then. Have to give Westerners props for at least portraying another culture and not in any denigrating way.

My daughters always quote the giant crab's lines at me: 'I ate my grandma!' Best character for me.

I will say, even though this movie didn't make an impact on me, at least it has some good songs. And the animation is so gorgeous with the sea being too pretty for its own good and the characters' hair-flow is majestic.

I loved Moana. The soundtrack was phenomenal and so hypnotic. I do understand what you're saying: some wouldn't or couldn't, for instance, imagine Jesus in the place of Maui, in terms of attitude and behaviour, but so readily accept a demigod as comedic and a little silly. I do recognize the fact, however, that the background and history of Pacific islanders' culture seemed well-researched, and went to great pains to simultaneously not offend, yet be entertaining enough for its target audience.

Disney gave their all in producing Moana. The reference to culture and ethnicity was amazing and lest not forget the music!

I think it had an accurate description of Maui (forgive my spelling). Even in mythology, he’s a trickster but noble at the same time.

When it comes to indigenous cultures, mainstream Western white culture uses the past tense. People are unaware that those who have been oppressed for generations are still struggling for their rights, beliefs, and rituals. The way white culture speaks about indigenous people in the past tense is terrible. Nonetheless, I don't believe the creators intended any disrespect. They did a fantastic job at introducing some cultural nuances. Most people had never heard of it before seeing the movie.

Moana was great! Disney movies are supposed to be light hearted and fun. I don't think Moana at any point crossed the line into disrespect.

I personally do not see any disrespect in this movie. I absolutely love it and so do my kids. We sing the songs all the time.

I love children's movies with good music in them and Moana is one of my favourites. The story is beautiful and it is told in a good way.

I don’t think is a disrespect, maybe if you take a literal interpretation but it’s a film in which the magic power of a shiny stone recovers the balance of the nature, I don’t think can be taken that seriously.
With Maoui, I feel the idea is more to make fun with him (he is funny) than of him.

I think the movie was great! I'm a big fan of the singing. I thought it was great to see Maoui (and even Moana) represent Polynesian and Samoan culture and do it in a way that was respectful and fun for everyone.
