I think reading keeps you alive and in contact with what is happening. It is also the only way how can remain updated in subjects of his choice.

I've been so obsessed with reading in the past (way back when, when I actually had some free time) that I would go days barely doing anything else but reading whatever it was that I was consumed with...I suppose when you only drink coffee, barely eat, and hardly groom yourself either, that may be a bit too much! lol

How much reading is too much?
My answer!

There's never too much reading.
There's always time to read. In my opinion.

I think when you eventually stop reading and realise that your eyesight isn't as good because you've stared at the book for so long is a good warning sign that you need to take a break!

I am prone to excessive reading. I wake up, begin to read and do not stop until my eyes physically close themselves at night. Even then i don't think that it is too much. Too much is not enough!

I totally agree with you about the benefits of reading. Fortunately, my dad was an avid reader who encouraged me to read and it has made a tremendous difference in my life. But I think reading can be problematic when it's used to escape something unpleasant in our lives, to the point of neglecting important duties and responsibilities or just necessary daily tasks. I'd say if you're calling in sick from work, neglecting chores and not picking your young kids up from school, you're probably overdoing it.

It's all about balance. Reading is all very well, but life is reality. We cannot hide behind our books all the time, and try to escape from the life we are living, and in essence live someone else's life.

i have seen a man wanting to weep
but
instead
beat his heart until it was unconscious.

From psychology, any habit or thought pattern becomes a disorder when it begins to have a drastic negative impact on your life. Reading is always good, but reading to the point where you neglect your responsibilities (schoolwork, job, family, etc.) is bad.

That being said, if you can manage a million words a week, go for it.

I am always staying up til wee hours of the morning because I just can't put a book down. I don't think you can read to much. Unless you don't get done what you need to do.

My boiling point is usually until I'm too tired to continue / have a headache. If I'm really into a book not even these things can stop me.

My rule for how much is too much reading would be this; read until you don't want to read any more. Then stop.
