Would you judge a book by it's FONT?

Post by chubby bunny »

Fonts would matter to some I guess. I don't really make a big deal about it but sometimes it affects my connection to the book, especially at the beginning of the story. How about you?

Kind of... I think if it's an unprofessional font, I would have a hard time reading it.

If it just jumps out at me as wrong, then no.

I don't think it would affect my connection with the book, as long as it isn't a font that makes it very hard to read.

Sometimes but I am lucky that some Kindle books come with the ability to change the font as well as the size of the font. Otherwise it would only be a minor annoyance and wouldn't be enough for me to set a book aside.

Well, sanserif fonts are generally harder to read than serif, but I've not yet seen a novel in sanserif font, so I can't remember a book with an unreadable font.

btw, chubby, the word is "its" not "it's".

Every book is judged by readers and potential readers by what is in it and how it is presented. So, yes, the font matters. Have you ever gone into a bookstore and seen a book with tiny print? To me the pages always look cluttered and uninviting. I generally will pass up a book that does not look (inside and out) like a quality book that will be easy on my eyes.

My advice is to plan your font and spacing (white space!) as carefully as you consider the cover. You want your readers to WANT to read your book, so you need to make it look like a quality book that is easy on the eyes.

I used to have a boss who was from a different English speaking country than me, and she would get irrationally angry if we wrote ANY document in a font outside of what she personally considered acceptable. There was only ONE that she deemed suitable... can't remember which one it was, but they looked exactly the same to me except for the lowercase t not being curled at the bottom. Obviously the font I am using right now would not be tolerated in her present. I might also mention that she is the biggest expletive in the history of the universe and she gives everyone from her country a bad name. 8)

I'm really guilty of picking a copy of a book based on it's font. I don't think I could stand to look at and read something that wasn't also visually pleasing. I think I would get a headache.

I never care about the font maybe if it is too pretty!

I've never really been affected by font.
Or tiny print...
Actually, sometimes if the print is tiny I'm happy because the book is larger than I first thought.
Hey, in a series when you want answers...
Larger books equals a better chance for answers. Maybe.

I get a kick out of clever uses for unusual fonts.
Harry Potter is an example of this.
Would I want to read a whole book written in Dombledore's curly handwriting? No.
Was it fun in the book and did it work to pull me in even further? Yes.

Only if the font would be distracting me in some way or is difficult for me to read. I like reading a book, not interpreting English into readable English.

Normally I don't take notice if it is one of the fonts that are commonly used. However, if it is some strange font that I am not used to, I may not enjoy the book as much.

Plus, I just hate COMIC SANS, in general.

I so agree! Comic Sans is awful. It's so childish :)

I like the default Calibri (body) -- that's pretty sexy, I think. So is Times New Roman. I also like Baskerville Old Face, but it's not great for prose. So yes, I would judge a book by it's font. But only initially. I'd still read it if it interested me :)
