A book that has disturbed/depressed you too much

Post by Reshmi »

I was very disturbed by the book 'The Stand' by Stephen King and actually had to stop reading it when I was almost halfway through because it was causing me sleepless nights and I used to feel depressed after reading a few pages. Are there any such books in your experience, would like to know so that I can stay away them :)

Lucky - Alice Siebold, that book hits way too close to home for me. Any rape scenes, for that matter are quite difficult for me to read but her story was a little too close to mine.

I wrote a review here on a book that really depressed me and made me sad. However the book was so beautifully written and the sadness also had a sweet story behind it which I became engrossed in. The book was called Beyond the Pass by E.K. Hughes.

SidneyC and Gwenwood, you have made me curious about these books now and I want to see if I feel the same about the books that you have mentioned.

Another one which had moved me was 'Room' by Emma Donoghue. This was a book which had me really disturbed cause I coudn't even imagine surviving such an ordeal. Also the narration by a child who had never seen the world outside was heart breaking.

If you goggle the Dyatlov pass incident which took place in 1959 you can get a better sense of what disturbed me and depressed me because this was true events. However the author made this into a fictional love story. Here's my review for it;

Where Things Come Back. I thought about this book for days afterward. It also made for a really exciting read.

The Catcher in the Rye depressed me so much because I couldn't believe I had wasted my time reading such drivel.

The short story The Apt Pupil by Stephen King was probably the most disturbing book I've ever read. The interesting thing about these types of stories though, is that they're ridiculously memorable.

Nearly everything I've ever read by Stephen King has left me feeling pretty strange after. There's almost never any hope at the end.
