And the answer is .......

The Frankenstein Monster

"Accursed creator! Why did you form a monster so hideous that even YOU turned from me in disgust? God, in pity, made man beautiful and alluring, after his own image; but my form is a filthy type of yours, more horrid even from the very resemblance. Satan had his companions, fellow devils, to admire and encourage him, but I am solitary and abhorred."
“I just got out of the hospital. I was in a speed reading accident. I hit a book mark and flew across the room.”

I concur. Victor Frankenstein abandoned his family and friends in pursuit of an experiment that he'd soon regret. The true monster is not the creation known as Frankenstein's monster but instead his wretched creator.

How about Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens? I think the ghosts taught him his lesson though-

They have each other, but they definitely are the most unfortunate.

Well, after befriending the dog that killed her brother I don't feel so bad.

I think the loneliest fictional character is Charlie Gordon from Flowers for Algernon.

Most of Dostoevsky's characters are very lonely, but I would say that the anonymous main character in "Notes from Underground" is the loneliest. He's an individual who is totally alienated from society - a rather disturbing character in a deeply unsettling book, which is usually the case when it comes to Dostoevsky.

What about Robinson Crusoe? He spent most of his life alone. Unlike the heroes of Dostoevsky, he was truly alone.
Another option could be Corum from "The Knight of the Swords" by Michael Moorcock. He was the last of his species.

Definitely! I remember reading this when I was very young and feeling so terribly sorry for them and frustrated with everything that happens in the books.
