Re: Do you read books of a series in chronological order?

Post by Kenneth_1996 »

I prefer to read books of a series in chronological order, but sometimes I end up reading a book in the middle of the series first. When that happens, I usually go back to the beginning and read the first book, reading in order and skipping the book that I had already read.

I also feel flustered when I read books out of order, feeling as if it has messed up the story in some way

I guess it depends on how large the series is, but I really loathe jumping in halfway. Like a lot of us, I was less obsessive about this when I was younger, though!

Always. This is completely essential for me. I'd prefer to read chronological order than publication order

Do you absolutely have to read your books in chronological order?
I do not have to absolutely read it chronologically but that is what I often do. Skipping some will make me feel I've missed some things.

Of course. For me, I must read the first book of the series before proceeding to the next one.

Yes, I will always read it in an order I can never jumble them as that will makes meaningless.

I don't read a lot of books in series. I was actually really disappointed when I initially read the Chronicles of Narnia out of order because years ago, like in the 1980's, they were not numbered in the order that follows the story. I did figure out the order in which they were supposed to have been numbered as a child and rearranged them accordingly, but was upset because they looked stupid on the shelf. I would like to find the incorrectly numbered ones now.

That's why I always do a background check on books, 'cause if it's in a series I absolutely have to start from the top. I'm not a fan of reading from the middle, I like to follow the gist from where it all started from.

DEFINITELY IN ORDER. It is very unsatisfying to know you skipped some book and then chronology gets messed up in your head.

Yes. I prefer it that way for better understanding. Otherwise, I won't be able to get the flow of the series.

I try my best to read in a chronological order but if I find myself in the middle, I must go back and read the other books of the series.

I've been very obsessive about this pretty much my entire life. I've tried to a bit more open-minded about it, especially since I got into Discworld with its seventeenth book, Interesting Times. I then went back and started at the beginning, with the intent to continue from there chronologically.

So, I still get very strict about reading it in a particular order (this could be internal chronology, or release order), but I'm less restrictive with the entry into the series.
