I place my books vertical. I like for them to ascend in size on my shelf.

I tried to organize my books horizontally and I just couldn't do it. I had room for all of my books, but it made it a pain to pull the one I wanted out. So mine are organized vertically. Don't have enough room for all of my books but that's okay. :)

I've always placed my books vertically; never even occurred to me to place novels horizontally. The only books I do place on their sides are picture books (which I keep for the kids I babysit).

I have a shortage of bookshelves in my room, so I tend to have a mix of vertical and horizontal placement. If book are all the same height, I'll place them horizontally because it does actually save space. But I also like to keep my series books in the same place so those tend to need vertical placing (I have a lot of series in a mix of hardcover and paperback so they don't stack nicely horizontally). It all just depends on which books fit where!
