I can’t stand when people write their own notes or thoughts down in a book. In my opinion, that just looks messy. I’m guilty of highlighting my favourite passages and page numbers though :?

I used to feel this way, wanting to keep my books immaculate, but a couple years ago I saw a video about how you see yourself and how the things you do and own tend to end up with a little bit of your personality as well, I now write in my books.

I use to highlight quotes and funny bits, and write about the parts I have liked or not liked, just as if you were leaving comments online, I feel like in this way anyone who reads this books after me will know that it passed though me and will be able to see the things the way I saw them when I read them. Even if I read the book again I will be able to re visit the first thoughts I had when I read it, since you don't always approach the same book with the same views.

I sporadically make marks or underline sentences. It's nothing extensive. I don't trade books with anyone, but I feel like if I did, they'd just think, "Huh, that must've intrigued them for some reason."

It's interesting to see how a common habit can elicit such powerful sentiments in the hearts of many (myself included, haha). I was taught that writing in your own books is fine as long as it's purposeful--like highlighting important information or using the margins to take notes. I personally could never get into it. Something about it adds mental clutter and distracts me from the read. I know some people who find it necessary to stay focused, however, so I try to bite my inner irked self when I notice someone doing it.

I absolutely love to discover another reader's notes in the margin of a well-read book. This is one of the things I miss most since I switched to Kindle.

It depends really. When I was a kid I used to scribble with my pen and markers in all my mom's books. Even now she looks through her old books and finds little note of mine scattered everywhere on the pages of her books. But also, considering that she is a language arts teacher, and she buys her own books, so she doesn't borrow from the library, she always has to make notes, highlight, underline, etc. That is so she could remember that particular passage, figurative language, word, etc. So, in conclusion, if it's for a good cause, it's fine.

I hate this, drives me crazy. I put tabs on my books but nothing more than that. I can't even stand highlighting

I actually really like it, it's a way to make a book truly your own .

I also hate that! I believe the books need to be preserved as original as possible to be kept for generations of people to read it after us.

I would only write in a textbook and even then with pencil and gently so it can be erased. I don't like my handwriting so I don't feel like it should be immortalised :lol2:

I don't write in a book unless a space purposely is given by the author. I like self-help books like that.

I only underline passages in my books. When I was a student, I would write one or two words next to passages for studying and paper purposes, but otherwise, I would agree with you. It's quite a pet peeve of mine!

Never, ever liked people writing in books - FYI wouldn't this topic be better in Community & Off Topic?

Same. The thought of writing in a book makes me feel uneasy lol. I don’t know how others can do it, but if I need to make notes I just either write it down on paper on type it up on my phone
